More Residents Gain Greater Access to Piped Water Supply from Laguna Water

Access to affordable piped water service connection in areas covered by Laguna Water has further improved as the Company reported an increase in its customer base by 22,536 connections in the fourth quarter of last year.

As the biggest water service provider in the province of Laguna, Laguna Water embarked on a massive expansion program in its concession area covering the cities of Biñan, Santa Rosa and Cabuyao by taking-over private water systems and at the same time expanding its water network to serve open communities. It is estimated that the tdddotal number of service connections have reached 90,000 by year-end of 2014 with almost P900 million spent for capital infrastructure development.

Since it started taking over the operations of the three cities in Laguna in 2009, Laguna Water now distributes about 97 million liters per day (mld). This is an increase of 41 mld compare to 2013.

Just recently, Laguna Water took over the operations and maintenance of Laguna Technopark, Inc. contributing about 30% to the  Company’s billed volume.  It also provides the water requirements of several commercial establishments such as United Laboratories, SM Santa Rosa, Robinson’s Mall and Pavilion Mall.

The biggest increase in service connections came from the domestic accounts in Biñan where only about 38% has access to piped water supply at the start of the year.  Access to piped water service in this city have increased to 56 % by closing of 2014.

Overall, Laguna Water is now serving about 60% of the total 900,000 population in its service area, a marked improvement from the 17% coverage when it started five years ago.

Laguna Water was formed through a joint venture agreement between the Provincial Government of Laguna and AAAWater Corporation, a subsidiary of Manila Water. Prior to the entry of Laguna Water, the locals were highly dependent on shallow wells, water vendors and other unreliable water service providers. With the introduction of best practices from its parent company, customers now enjoy affordable piped water supply with water quality that meets the Philippine National  Standards for Drinking Water.

The public-private partnership will be up to 2035.
